Project Overview

OBJECTIVE

Fairo is an ethics rating system for AI companies, services, and models. The ratings are based on four categories:

  • Fairness and Bias

  • Privacy and Protection

  • Transparency

  • Labor Practice and Compensation

DISCLAIMER

This project was initiated and finished in early 2023 during the height of AI's new popularity. The information, research, and data are reflective of this time.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

This project was started and conceptualized for my Spring 2023 Senior Capstone Studio. The Capstone Project employs a trend-based research approach to develop distinctive design projects and ideas that showcase high levels of innovation and impact.

The capstone, as the final studio of my academic career, represents the culmination of skills and knowledge that I have learned during my time at the Georgia Tech Industrial Design program.

Research methods

  • Survey (Qualtrics)

  • Secondary Online Research

Design Process

EMPATHIZE

Research

Through secondary trend research, competitive analysis, and user survey, I wanted to understand the AI Landscape better.

Research Goals

  • Understand public perception of rising trend and sudden integration of AI

  • Examine the ethical standards and regulations that are current followed

  • Analyze how users are effected by ethical/unethical practices

  • Identify existing platforms related to ethical AI practice

To streamline my research process, I established clear goals and created a research plan that would guide the process.

Trend Research

My discovery research began conducting trend intersect research to identify gaps and opportunities in user experience within the AI space. I analyzed market research reports, trend forecasting resources, current periodicals, scholarly research on human behavior, and design resources.

Survey

From a total of 27 responses received through Qualtrics, below is a glance of data gathered.

Competitive Analysis

Provisional Archetypes

Using the Insight from my secondary research and survey, I formed two provisional personas.

Empathy Map

Using an empathy map, I organized and synthesized the data gathered from the survey that reflects the two persona archetypes.

Patterns

Active Information Seekers

Many participants, regardless of whether they are enthusiastic or concerned about the future of AI, all users seek some source of information to learn more.

Privacy and Ethical Considerations

Many participants were concerned about, unaware of, or questioned how their data was used by AI models.

Value-Driven Decision Making

Many participants engage with AI tools to advance their personal/professional goals, but they often lack awareness of the AI models' capabilities and limitations

Insights

  • People continuously seek knowledge and understanding

  • People desire and value trust and transparency

  • People want meaningful and effective integration of AI

Needs

  • To access clear and comprehensive information

  • To understand and see policies, sources, and usage information.

  • To enable practical and independent AI integration

User Persona

The representative of the target user. Through my secondary and primary research, I created a persona that would accurately represent and describe the target users. Emily’s presence will guide design decisions moving forward.

DEFINE / IDEATE

Defining the Problem

To help define these problems, I used the insights gained from research and interviews to create POV statements to frame the problem from Emily’s perspective.

User Flow

Lo-Fi Wireframes

Design / Prototype

Developing a Mockup

I developed the low-fidelity wireframes into a prototype to be able to test with real users that the design decisions made thus far actually made user needs that came up during my research phase.

Lo-Fi Digital Wireframes

Mockup

The goal of making mockups was to make the app more tangible including color and typography.

Final Design

Final mockup of the app including brief introductive onboarding and the core pages

Reflections and Takeways

The direction of the project had to be shifted halfway during the four month course which resulted in there being not enough time to test the design with potential users. I had already put out an initial survey with the intention of designing an AI-powered SEO, but after doing research, I realized that multiple solutions had already been designed for the problem that I had established. As a result, I had to last-minute shift the design objective to be an educational ratings database.

If I had more time with this project, I would have considered the following:

01 USER SURVEY

The survey questions I had put out initially were not meaningful or intentional enough, and as a result, I think I struggled to make certain design decisions because I lacked and understanding of the users.

02 USER TESTING

Since I have designed a final mockup, the next step would be to create a prototype to test with users. That way, I could make more meaningful adjustments to the design.
